Design begins with the property, not a plant list: sun and shade through the day, drainage and low spots, existing mature trees worth building around, deer pressure, salt exposure near the shore, and where the neighbors' windows are. Long Island covers a lot of conditions, and the same plan doesn't work in Greenlawn and in Long Beach.
From there we lay out bed lines, specify trees and shrubs at the right installed size, layer perennials and grasses for succession through the season, and plan evergreen structure so the property still reads well in February.
Lighting, irrigation, drainage, lawn areas, edging and mulch or stone finishes complete the plan, and everything is coordinated with any patio, pool or deck work happening at the same time.
